According to the definition of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), recreational shipping is, in contrast to commercial shipping, non-commercial shipping on inland waters or in sea areas. However, this needs to be amended, because there is also commercially operated recreational shipping, for example for training or when chartering individual berths.

The size of the ship is not the only decisive criterion for this, but there are criteria as to what counts as a sport boat and what is not.
